The Veronica Trial
The trial of the step-mother and step-siblings of Verónica Molina, whose burnt remains were discovered in 2013, dominated the headlines at the end of the month. Although the exact circumstances of her death may never be known (her father and presumed killer died of cancer shortly after the discovery of her remains), the trial has revealed a harrowing story of continuous abuse. According to testimony, the mentally-disabled victim was subject to continuous physical and sexual abuse, was said to have been under-nourished, poorly-dressed and ‘forced to work in a field like a slave’. Although the accused have been silent during the trial, the step-mother previously told police that Veronica had been pregnant (presumably by her father) and that the girl’s father had handed her a rucksack with girls remains, while telling her that ‘Veronica was not coming back’. The prosecution are asking that the step-mother receives 3 years in prison for abuse and 6 months for desecrating a cadaver. They are also seeking a sentence of 3 years prison for the step-brother for abuse and 5 months prison for the step-sister for desecrating a cadaver.

25th Travesía a Nado El Río
The 25th edition of the annual swimming race between Lanzarote and La Graciosa took place on the 30th of September. Strong currents meant that just 365 of the 689 participants that set off from Playa Bajo el Risco in Lanzarote managed to cross the 2.6km strait within the 2 hours allocated by the organisers. Daniel Sánchez won the race with a time of 40:37, followed by Alejandro Candela (40:47) and José Víctor García (44:08) – the top 3 had all won the event on previous occasions. 19 year-old Verónica Navarro won the ladies’ event for the fourth time in 49 minutes and 15 seconds.
